Dutch Matchlock Arquebus

The Arquebus was the first firearm to feature a trigger, as well as shoulder stock, priming pan, and matchlock all in one design. This essentially makes it one of the first true handheld firearms. They also sometimes came with a hook-like pole for bracing the arquebus against. The Russian Streltsy also famously used arquebus in conjunction with bardiche, choosing to instead brace the gun on the pole of the bardiche.

The matchlock mechanism of an arquebus works similarly to its handgonne ancestor and is the basis for the later developments of the flintlock. When the trigger is pulled, a smoldering piece of rope presses down to the pan, which contains the blackpowder, and ignites the powder, firing the weapon.
